Richard "Dick" King, Mt. Pleasant, SC formerly of Long Branch, passed away on July 17, 2010. He was born on Sept. 3, 1927 in Monticello, NY, the sixth of seven children born to Alice Murran King and Joseph King. He is predeceased by his brothers James, Joseph and Thomas and by his sisters Helen, Eleanor and Mary. The old guard has passed.
Dick was graduated from Monticello High School, Class of 1944 and enlisted in the Army. He served as an Army medic in Fairbanks, Alaska. After discharge he attended Ryder College. Dick met the love of his life, Maureen Beale in 1947. They were married on September 9, 1950 beginning a relationship that endured and thrived for more than 60 years.
Dick began a successful sales career at the legendary F.W. Woolworth, NY. He became a regional sales manager for the northeast for Newell/Rubermaid Corp. for 30 years. He and Maureen relocating with his family to Long Branch, NJ in 1963. Dick was the ultimate salesman, loving every interaction with people, as well as the challenge of moving products.
Mr. and Mrs. King moved to South Carolina in 1996. He was a Grand Kinght for the Knights of Columbus Council 9475, and achieved the rank of fourth degree, Mr. King was an active fundraiser for the Knights. He was coordinated the Mount Pleasant Men's Coffee Club and initiated the monthly speaker program for the Senior Ministry at Christ Our King Catholic Church. Mr. King was an avid reader and founded his own book club.
He volunteered regulary at the Catholic Charities Soup Kitchen. He was nominated for the Jefferson Award in 2008 for his service to the community. Dick enjoyed working as a demo professional in his free time. Hewas a proud Irishman with a quick wit and great sense of humor that made him the life of any party. His warmth and empathy enabled him to reach out and touch many lives.
He is survived by his beloved wife Maureen and four Daughters, Kathleen and Susumu , San Francisco, California; Maureen of Mount Pleasant, Meghan and Cristobal, Madrid, Spain and Kerry Francis and Neal of Brick, NJ; and two grandsons Cristobal and Kevin of Madrid, Spain.
